Mahindra Singh Dhoni, the long-standing Indian Skipper stepped down from his designation from limited over Captaincy. As reported, the decision to resign from Captaincy was conveyed to MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors by the player himself. He met Prasad in Nagpur where he was with his Ranji Team, Jharkhand, playing semi-final against Gujarat in the tournament. During the tea break, he was seen on a long conversation with MSK Prasad. The captain might have thought his resignation from the post as the best decision for the time, according to Prasad. The chairman expressed his respect in the decision. He lauded the player's sense of "integrity and patriotism" and said that he "got a high clarity in thinking."

MS Dhoni has a record of accomplishment being the most successful captain of India. In his tenure, the team won the T20 World Cups in 2007 and 2011. India also won the 2013 Champions Trophy. His ODI captaincy record has the accolade of winning 110 matches out of 199 since he took the baton in 2007. He led the team in 72 T20s winning 41 of it. The Player also holds the record of being the most successful Test captain of India. Under his captaincy, India won 27 tests and had a draw in 15, while losing only 18 matches. He took off his test captaincy in December 2014 passing it on to Virat Kohli, the current skipper.

Per the manager of the player, Arun Pandey, the team's interest has always been the "first and foremost" for Dhoni. He said that the player believes he accomplished building the "crux of the team" and it is the right time to give up captaincy. He will continue to play with the team as the wicketkeeper and a batsman. Pandey said that his decision was not impulsive and overnight. The player took the stance after thinking over it well.

Sachin Tendulkar congratulated MS Dhoni on his career as the most successful captain of the team. He acknowledged his success in both T20 and ODI World Cups transforming from an aggressive to a steady and decisive player. As a captain, he scored 6633 runs in ODI with a strike rate of 86. As a T20 captain, he had a strike rate of 122.60 to aggregate 1112 runs. Dhoni will play as the wicket keeper and a front batsman in the team. Until now the Board has not made any decision on the selection of the next captain. However, Virat Kohli is being considered as the best contender for the post.
