Ahead of Sri Lanka’s West Indies tour, the team is struck with a surprising situation. In a shocking incident, father of batsman Dhananjaya de Silva is shot dead in Rathmalana, south of Colombo, by unidentified gunman. The incident happened at around 8:30 PM, on Friday night. Mr. Rajan was a councilor of Dehiwala Mt. Lavinia City Council. He was elected only a couple of months back in February. As an impact of the incident, Dhananjaya de Silva has withdrawn from the West Indies tour. He was in the squad preparing to leave for West Indies for the Test series.
In a statement, the player stated that he is shocked and sad to inform about the unfortunate death of his father. He said, it is almost on an eve of a very important Test series and tour of the West Indies. The batsman requested everyone to uphold them in prayers on behalf of his Mother and immediate family members. He also thanked his fans, fellow cricketers and the fraternity for their concerns and sympathies. He wished a very best West Indies tour to his team, saying his heart will be always with team Sri Lanka.
Dhananjaya de Silva was selected for the test series in West Indies after playing a couple impressive matches. He thumped a century in Delhi followed by another Test ton in Chittagong. In January, the player became the fastest Sri Lanka batsman to reach 1000 Test runs playing only 13 Test matches till date. He has also played 17 ODIs.
The Sri Lanka squad visited Kalubowila Hospital on the night of the incident. There has been no delay in the scheduled departure of the team, however, there are possibilities for the plans to change. Sri Lanka Cricket president Thilanga Sumathipala supported the player saying SLC will take every measure to support him at this time of “sorrow and grief.” He said, he will have the time to overcome the great pain and suffering caused by the tragedy. SLC presented an official release to address the incident.
