With a view to renew the team with new vigor, Afghanistan Cricket Board have appointed Dean Jones as the coach of the team. Jones is the former batsman from Australia. He is now the interim coach of team Afghanistan. His tenure is now fixed for the upcoming Intercontinental Cup that will played in Honk Kong. In a statement published by Afghanistan Cricket Board, it was confirmed that Jones is being appointed as the "interim head coach of Afghanistan for the upcoming tour of Honk Kong for the Intercontinental Cup."
The decision to appoint him as the permanent coach will be taken only after the tour. This too was stated by ACB. The statement read, "both sides will consider a long-term coaching agreement after the tour of Honk Kong." Afghanistan is the former champion of the ICC Intercontinental Cup. The team won the tournament in 2010.
Dean Jones was the commentator of the Afghanistan Cricket Team presently, which made him popular across the fan base of the country. He was the commentator in the recently concluded Shpageeza T20 tournament. The former coach of the team was Lalchand Rajput. So far, Inzamam-ul Haq, Rashid Latif and Kabir Khan has been the earlier coaches of the team. In five years, the ACB has changed five coaches. In a Twitter response, Jones said that he is happy to lead the Afghanistan team to Honk Kong. He Tweeted that he is happy to announce his appointed as the interim coach for the tournament.
Dean Jones was made the Member of Order of Australia for 'service to cricket as a player, coach and commentator, and to the community through fundraising activities for organizations assisting people with cancer.' In 2005, he publicly expressed his disappointments for not being considered as the coach of team India. In 2016, Jones was appointed as the head coach of Islamabad, the PSL team. The team won the tournament in the season.
