Former Pakistan Champions Trophy winning skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed and young fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi were involved in a heated discussion during the PSL 2021 match between Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
The ongoing edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is being played in Abu Dhabi after it was suspended in Pakistan owing to a coronavirus outbreak. In the last ball of the penultimate over of the Quetta Gladiators’ innings, Shaheen Shah bumped Sarfaraz Ahmed with a bouncer and the batter was hit directly on his helmet. He was looking to pull the ball towards deep square leg, but the pace and bounce from Shaheen was just too much. He eventually ran a single, which was counted as a leg-bye.
Following this, Sarfaraz asked Shaheen to calm down and the latter didn’t like being told. Thus, the duo was involved in a heated exchange of words. However, Mohammed Hafeez, the senior Pakistan batter, was quick to intervene and calmed both of them.
The match was won by Quetta Gladiators by 18 runs and Sarfaraz was delighted with their bowler’s stunning performance. During the post-match presentation, he spoke about the pitch and how it played differently that day.
“The pitch played a bit differently today, our bowlers bowled really well to the right-handers and this match and the win were really important for us. I’m really proud of the comeback from the boys and the fielding was good which also helped us a lot in building the pressure,” Sarfaraz said.
Here’s how Twitter reacted on the incident:
Shaheen Shah must respect his elders… Sarfaraz is his first captain and misbehaving with him was untoward… have seen players like Zaheer Abbas, Asif Iqbal, Mushtaq Mohammad respecting Intikhab Alam so much….. #harhaalmayrespectelders

I completely agree with you. Sarfaraz bhai is a senior so Shaheen should bowl half volleys to him. It’s very bad he hit his captains helmet. Bad attitude🙄👏🤦♂️ https://t.co/oV6zVZTpnk

I have good sources in “Match Officials” too. Here is real story of Shaheen Sarfaraz fight. pic.twitter.com/nPzPKpKoow

Sarfaraz probably reminding Shaheen that he is former captain and he should not bowl bouncers to him. Pommie in the commentary box calls that an abuse of seniority. Great scenes in #PSL6 😂

I highly doubt Sarfaraz told Shaheen not to bowl a bouncer to him. Must have been something else. #PSL6

Think Sarfaraz merely asked Shaheen to cool down (none of his business, but the young player who started his career under you equation etc).
But Shaheen’s pent up anger of being at the receiving end of all the previous lectures may have resulted in him not wanting any of it…

Even as a die-hard supporter of Lahore Qalanders I strongly condemned the action of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sarfaraz is a senior player and Ex captain of the national team and he deserves much much respect, if you can’t respect him don’t be disrespectful towards him 😡#HBLPSL6 pic.twitter.com/tG85Yl1gH2
