The CoA apparently, is not leaving the coach appointment issue without an impact. Its stand almost came up as a challenge to the Cricket Advisory Committee’s selection of Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan as batting and bowling consultants. The CAC announced the coach team comprising of Ravi Shastri, as the head coach and the former two as consultants. However, a member of CoA clearly stated that the CAC ‘exceeded the brief’ on selection of the head coach.
This started a war of words between the two sides, with CAC replying by an email. Per CAC, it appointed Dravid and Khan after consulting Ravi Shastri, the head coach. The decision of CAC gained a positive response from BCCI, but now, with CoA standing upright against it, BCCI could not, but oppose the same.
BCCI stand on the coach position is being dramatic. After CAC selected Dravid and Khan as consultants, an official BCCI release announced their appointment. The release also applauded CAC’s decision. Following this, after two days, CoA head Vinod Rai stated that no contract is between BCCI and Dravid-Khan pair, which leaves their role on hold. Per Rai, it is a recommendation and “it will be acted upon in consultation with the head coach.”
Lately, the CoA commented, Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan as consultants are mere recommendations. Therefore, there will be further discussions on their appointment or even requirement for the projected roles. The CoA has formed another panel comprising of CK Khanna, President of BCCI, Amitabh Choudhary, BCCI Secretary and Diana Edulji, CoA member. The committee will discuss the prospects of Dravid and Khan with Ravi Shastri. Meanwhile, Shastri is reported to want B Arun as the bowling coach. Now, only the outcome of the meeting will determine the next stance in selection of coach. Currently, Shastri is in England.
Vinod Rai thanked the CAC on behalf of ‘Cricket India’, BCCI and CoA. He said the recommendation is accepted. The head also commented on any conflict of interest, willingness, and availability of Dravid and Khan.
