Sri Lanka scored 373 runs batting in the first inning. In 135.3 overs, the inning featured Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal the most. The players forged a partnership of 181 playing more than 75 overs together. It was the third wicket partnership that steered Sri Lanka’s inning to the chase of 536 runs. Mathews scored 111 runs, while the captain wreaked up 164 runs playing until inning ended. He was the last wicket to fall after the batting line had a total collapse.
The inning struck a hefty wobble after Mathews was dismissed. With his wicket, the visitors fell from 256 for 4 in 97.6 overs to 342 for 4 wickets in 26.5 overs. India bowlers overpowered the inning while they scalped the lower order batting. The player adding some runs was Samarawickrama, batting after Mathews for 33.
In the last stretch, Dinesh Chandimal added 30 batting with Lakshan Sandakan, while the latter played 20 balls without scoring any. The inning lasted until the morning session of the fourth day, when Chandimal shot up three more boundaries before losing his wicket. India’s attack was a mix of pace and seam options. Ishant Sharma and R Ashwin ended with 3 wickets each, while Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja removed two each. India started to bat in their second inning by the morning session of the fourth day. Murali Vijay was an early wicket falling in the third wicket.
Earlier, the match struck an awkward situation when Sri Lanka players could not put themselves up on the ground complaining the air quality of Delhi. India was batting at 500 plus score with four more wickets at hand. As the visitors came up with musk on the field after lunch, the match took an eerie turn. The primary bowlers pulled out from the stadium halting the match.
Virat Kohli than declared the end of inning indicating India bowlers are ready to bowl in such condition. The incident pulled up a mild ruckus with organizations like NGT voicing against government authorities. Also, Sri Lanka coach spoke about the need of a healthy condition to play.
