India is set to play a three match ODI series against Australia as a part of the ICC Women’s Championship. The tournament will begin on March 12 in Vadodara and will end on March 18. BCCI has rolled out the names in the squad for the tournament head by skipper Mithali Raj. Previously, India won against South Africa in the ODI series by 2-1. The ODI side was headed by Raj. In the following T20 series, Harmanpreet Kaur lead the team to a victory of 3-1 against South Africa. All three matches of the upcoming series will be played at Vadodara. Currently, India is second in the points table. Australia is also second in the point table, but the team is fourth in net-run rate.
The ODI team will play without Jhulan Goswami, the senior bowler. She injured her heels in the previous tournament at the height of her form. She became the first women cricketer to pick 200 wickets in ODI. Goswami will be rested for six weeks before she would hit the practice sessions again. Currently, the bowler is under treatment in National Cricket Academy of Bengaluru. BCCI selectors have replaced Goswami with Sukanya Parida. The latter played for India last in November 2016. Parida is a seam bowler. So far, the 24 years old seamer was featured only in a single match against West Indies. She was crucial for the defense, in which, India won.
Another women player to retain her place in the team is Jemimah Rodrigues, the uncapped player. She was also in the team to South Africa in ODI format but was not selected in the primary XI. However, in the following T20 series, she played with an excellent form as an opener for India.
After winning both the series in South Africa, skipper Mithali Raj commented that the women team has a good future. Expressing her satisfaction over performances she said the team will be in a perfect stage to play the upcoming T20 World Cup. Per the captain, the India women team is growing and they did not have to rely on just a couple of players.
