In the ongoing Ranji season, Cricket Association of Bengal also found itself entangled in an indiscipline spree. The Kalyani Ground was scheduled for the match between Bengal and Vidarbha. Chief Curator of CAB Sujan Mukherjee was absent being replaced by SB Singh, from Jharkhand Board, overseeing the preparation of pitch. The situation came into light when Bengal Skipper Manoj Tiwary complained that the team will not enjoy the “home advantage”. Per the player, BCCI has decided to bring up neutral curators to won on pitch. Also, it was found that the Bengal Curator has been disrupting the neutral curator’s work.
Due to disagreements, the ground work got delayed as workers were waiting for Mukherjee’s order. The delay incited neutral curator Singh to inform BCCI about the situation. SB Singh is also the only pitch curator who has a doctorate in pitch preparation. BCCI directed Mukherjee to cooperate with Singh. However, to this the approach of Mukherjee was unreceptive. CAB backed Mukherjee asking BCCI on the “exact role” of a neutral curator. President of the Board Saurav Ganguly also distanced himself from commenting on the issue in public. He said, the issue will be sorted out and it is between CAB and BCCI.
Since the last Ranji season, it included in the rule books that a neutral curator will work on the pitches for Ranji Trophy. This would ensure equal weight to opponents instead of offering an advantage to the home team. Pitches in several matches has been curated by neutral curators. In fact, there were complaints last season that home teams have been using doctored pitches to get the conditions favoring them. This was the reason, BCCI directed Ranji matches to be held in neutral venues. Also, when the venue involves a home team, a neutral curator is sent to prepare the pitch.
The scuffle involving curators between CAB and BCCI is because idea like ‘home advantage’ have become a general norm in the domestic tournament.
