It was more than a decade when Ravichandran Ashwin last lead a team. He was successful enough to win several titles for Tamil Nadu, his home squad as a 21 years old bowler. Now, the captainship spree for the top spinner seems to return as he established himself as one of the top spinners of the world. It was only a couple of days back when Ashwin was selected as the captain of Kings XI Punjab, the IPL team, in which he was inducted for the maiden season. Now, BCCI made him the captain of India A for the upcoming Deodhar Trophy.
After being selected as the captain of Kings XI Punjab, Ashwin remarked that it was a natural progression for him to be in a leadership role after playing top level cricket for many years. Meanwhile, Virender Sehwag, director of Kings XI expressed his thoughts of selecting a bowler as a captain of his team since before. In the upcoming Deodhar Trophy, Ashwin is set to India A team against Karnataka, which won Vijay Hazare Trophy 2018 recently. On the other hand, India B team will be under Shreyas Iyer, who played for India as a middle order batsman formerly.
Deodhar Trophy is featuring other top players like Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Shubman Gill, Siddarth Kaul and Ishan Kishan. All of them represented India earlier and has been active in the team A as well as domestic tournaments across the formats. Also, BCCI announced the team for the upcoming Irani Cup, the first-class championship. In the tournament, Rest of India team will play against Vidarbha, the Ranji Trophy winner. Rest of India team will be feature Karun Nair as the captain along with players like Mayank Agarwal and Ravindra Jadeja.
Jadeja was injury stricken in his previous campaign. In Vijay Hazare Trophy, he abstained from bowling in the last three matches due to a side strain injury. He is rested for a week to recover before the Irani Cup.
