Anil Kumble will remain the coach for the next West Indies tour as well. The tour starts immediately after Champions Trophy and team India will head directly to the Caribbean nation. The extension of Kumble’s contract will be done to include the tour. However, this will only happen if the Cricket Advisory Committee fails to decide on the next coach for the team. The committee has also indicated that Kumble is still their first choice for the position of next head coach. It is the same committee comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Saurabh Ganguly and VVS Laxman, who appointed Kumble a year back.
Considering the record of team India under the leadership of Kumble, it has been an exemplary year so far. This leaves no rooms for CAC to replace Kumble as he already proved his competence and compatibility as the coach of Team India. As the advisory committee might take more time to conclude Kumble’s contract will be extended for a couple of weeks. The CoA consulted about it with BCCI Secretary Amitabh Chaudhary and CEO Rahul Johri. Vinod Rai, Chairman of CoA said if there is a delay in response from CAC, the board “will request Anil Kumble to cover the West Indies tour” as well.
The Caribbean tour of India will begin on June 22. It will consist of five ODIs and a T20 match. It was being reported that certain rifts existed between players and the coach. Captain Virat Kohli also came into the equation for his alleged disagreements with Kumble. However, the player denied such differences and any misunderstandings at the dressing room. There are more chances for the report being a fuss or a media blitz.
However, seems the rift, in fact, is between BCCI and Kumble, for his voices against the current pay structure and grades of players. Earlier, the coach spoke of higher pay grades and about his disappointments on the recent pay hike of players as well as himself. There were similar voices from Virat Kohli, aligning with the coach. But somehow, reports of a possible rift between players and the coach came forth after a year of intense success and coordination.
