On July 11, Tuesday, Angelo Mathews gave up his position as the captain of Team Sri Lanka across all formats. Mathews has been quite inconsistent with the role, dropping out of the team during tours due to personal reasons. This however, is not the actual reason, the team’s poor stance in international podium is. The Sri Lankan front-man served as the skipper for a couple of years. He led the team to a handful of good matches, but could not keep up the consistency as it usually happens in the game. The ex-captain acknowledged the fact that “there has been significant poor performances” being “humble enough to accept it.” The player also added about his intension of stepping down earlier, but he saw no better replacement.
Replacing Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal is appointed as the captain of Sri Lanka in Test format. In addition, for ODI and T20 formats, Upul Tharanka is selected to lead the team. Hence, Dinesh Chandimal and Upul Tharanga are the new faces replacing Angelo Mathews. Per the former captain, they are the candidates who can take over the responsibility. He expects the resignation and change of leadership to offer enough time to prepare for World Cup 2019 season. Dinesh Chandimal has been the deputy captain of the team. The player has also led the T20 team earlier. On the other hand, Upul Tharanga served as the ODI captain replacing Mathews, when he dropped out during injury.
Sri Lanka faced its latest defeat from Zimbabwe in ODI by 3-2. Earlier, the team had to return from Champions Trophy campaign in the league stages. Sri Lanka is struck with a dip in their form in both bowling and batting fronts. With the change of leadership, the change in stance of the team is also expected. Mathews wants Chandimal to be more successful than him. Chandimal said, captaincy is not an easy job.
