Kings XI Punjab were bolstered to 189 with the century from Hashim Amla. It was a feat for the player, as he became only the third player in the tournament’s history to score a second ton in a same tournament. However, Punjab had to face their sixth loss of the season. They have already played 11 matches and only a couple to go, to scale up the differences in the point chart. Now the team is on fifth position in the point chart. Gujarat Lions, on the other hand, remained successful to chase down the target with two balls to spare.
It was Dwayne Smith, who struck 74 off 39 taking the dig on Punjab bowlers. Gujarat played without its top international players. Leaving aside the likes of Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Bravo, Jason Roy, and Andrew Tye, the team played alongside the like of Dwayne Smith, Aaron Finch, and James Faulkner. With adequate hand from Dinesh Karthik and captain Suresh Raina, the strike from Dwayne Smith came up as the winning bet. The batsman thumped the deliveries from Sandeep Sharma, Mohit Sharma and Varun Aaron. After player was removed, the chase was at 70 off 52 balls with eight players on hand. It was Karthik who hauled the chase to the victory mark.
Both the innings were headstrong in the beginning. While, Punjab delivered a century stand with its openers, Gujarat was steered with the 90 plus opening partnership. Hashim Amla played with massive aggression hammering boundaries off every bowler. He reached 50 in 35 balls. In the last five overs, with Shaun Marsh, he brought 66 runs together. For Dwayne Smith, it was his fifty after 11 IPL innings. In the last six innings, all he could do was score single digit runs. However, as a breakthrough in the last match, he smashed eight fours in the powerplay stretch, reaching half century in 28 balls.
