South Africa had to exit the Champions Trophy midway. The top ODI team that could not enter the semifinal stage of the tournament is certain to face certain blues. One of them is the question over captaincy of AB de Villiers in the format. However, despite such occasions, the player was considered for the position in the next T20 campaign against England. After Champions Trophy is over, South Africa is scheduled for a three-match series against England. T20 captain Faf du Plessis will not participate in the series as he is off to a family occasion of his first child birth. He will be back for the following Test series. In his absence, de Villiers will play as the captain in the T20 format.
The team playing T20 has rested several players apart from du Plessis. Both batsmen and bowlers are being rested from the T20 series. Hashim Amla, JP Duminy and Quinton de Kock are rested from batting front. While, from bowling Kagiso Rabada is sent home. On the other hand, Dwaine Pretorius is included in the squad. Two other new players are Reeza Hendricks and Tabriaz Shamsi. The rest of the team now consist of de Villiers, David Miller, Farhaan Behardien, Imran Tahir, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Wayne Parnell and Andile Phehlukwayo.
AB de Villiers had a poor strike in this Champions Trophy season. He was limited to single digit scores in three matches his team played in league stage. South Africa was defeated by Pakistan as well as India, leaving the arena before even the semifinal. This let the player lost his top ODI batsmen spot as well. He reached the third position in the group behind Virat Kohli and David Warner. De Villiers also had a bleak performance in the IPL tournament ahead of the world tournament. In South Africa squad, Hashim Amla is on through the best form. He was among the top run getter in IPL. In Champions Trophy as well, he blitzed.
