AB de Villiers resigns from ODI Captaincy
AB de Villiers said he feels refreshed and revived after the long rest and is ready to prepare properly.

In a major disruption in the South Africa cricket team, AB de Villiers resigned as the captain of the ODI side. De Villiers was handed over the captaincy baton only a few seasons back from Hashim Amla. After taking over the captaincy, the player dropped himself from the Test team. How, stepping down from the designation, he will foray again to Test format. This will make him available for all formats of the game. The player will discuss his prospects with Cricket South Africa to plan his return into the Test team.

De Villiers’s stint as a captain was a haywire, injured, and out from several series. The tournaments against New Zealand and Australia were the important ones he missed. He was back for the Champions Trophy 2017 season leading the team. However, South Africa’s campaign did not reach the semi-final stages of the cup. De Villiers indicated to pass on the position to Faf du Plessis, the current captain of Test and T20 team. He said du Plessis proved to be an “outstanding captain of T20 and Test team.” Per the captain, he resigned keeping this fact in mind.

Resigning from the Captainship, de Villiers thinks it is now time for someone else to take the ODI side forward and he is honored to have lead the team for past six years. He disclosed that he has assured national selectors on his availability across all formats of the game. Feeling “refreshed and revived” after the long break, now de Villiers wants to “get back on the field.” He said he must prepare properly and he will be ready to play from middle of October.

Following his timings, the top batsman is most likely to return for the Boxing Day Test against Australia followed by the campaign against India on New Year’s Eve. He defended his strategy of ‘picking and choosing’ that it is it is simply not the truth as projected. The player made it clear that he has not put himself before the team. He is working with CSA, trying to “prolong” his career as a cricketer “as long as possible.”
