A little gesture of goodness can transform as a greatness, enough to prove what it means to be human. India and Pakistan are not only arch rivals in cricket, but also in those border areas where hundreds have sacrificed their lives from both the countries. Still, the feelings of brotherhood and fraternity lights up those moments of joy, which both the countries can celebrate and cherish with the same spirit of love, respect and oneness.
Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi is known for his voice of fraternity towards India-Pakistan relationships. It is more than a couple of times he was heard making allegations against media of both the countries that the latter do not focus on positive news. Lately, his simple gesture of respect towards the Indian flag in Switzerland won hearts of millions in both India and Pakistan. While the media flooded with accolades and praises for the cricketer, Social Media and the cricketer fraternity could not contain the buzz.
The incident happened in Switzerland where retired cricketers like Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Lasith Malinga and Afridi were campaigning for the inaugural match of the Ice Cricket Tournament. As the player was walking through fans, an Indian girl with the country’s flag in her hand requested him for a picture. She was trying to fold the India flag as Afridi came to pose, as she did not want to show it in a picture with a Pakistani player. But to everyone’s pleasant surprise, all-rounder Pakistani batsman asked the girl to straighten the Indian flag on her hand, hold it properly, and pose for the picture with it. The whole episode was recorded as it unfolded.
This gesture of respect towards a national flag, of any country it might be, won the hearts of millions of fans. Cricketers from both India and Pakistan earn love and respect in both the sides. While Pakistan cricketers have a huge fan base in India, likewise, Indian players are loved in Pakistan. Shahid Afridi is among the most respected cricketer in not only India, but also around the globe. His personality and attitude both while playing and outside stadium have been creating headlines at times.
